PROGRAM BRAZILIAN FURNITURE MEETS IN CEARA ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL OF FIEC MAY 2006 TRANSLATION DONE BY ROSALIENE BACCHUS

The program Brazilian Furniture was held for the first time, on June 9th, 2006, in the State of Ceara. The
Syndicate of the Furniture Industries of the State of Ceara – through its Executive Director, Leonardo
Alencar de Figueiredo – participates in this program.
Matters discussed at this meeting – held at the headquarters of the Federation of Industries of the State of
Ceara (FIEC) – include the following:
- Agreement regarding video of the program’s participation at the Las Vegas Fair (July 24 to 28) and
Angola Fair (July 26 to 30); and
- Analysis of the results of the Fair held in Dubai earlier this year.

The program Brazilian Furniture was started in 1998 by Abimovel and the
Agency for the Promotion of Exports with the aim of increasing Brazilian
furniture exports. The intention is to convert the model of furniture exports
into a model of greater added value based on design. In addition, the
competitiveness of the national furniture industry will be increased through
higher standards of quality, productivity, and customer service.
To achieve these goals, Brazilian Furniture has promoted the inclusion of
Companies registered in the program Brazilian Furniture have had
opportunities to participate in diverse activities developed in three areas:
- Export culture;
- Export structure; and
- International business negotiations.
Some of these activities include company missions, acquisition of know-
how,upgrade of the factory plan, awareness of ISO 9000 and 14000,
The major importers of furniture produced in Ceara were as follows:
- Puerto Rico
- United States
- Germany
- Mexico
- France
Products exported comprised of items for dormitories, wooden furniture,
upholstery, chairs, and metal furniture.
Brazilian furniture industries within the program with the aim of bringing them into the international market.
According to the Executive Superintendent of Abimovel, Miguel Sanchez Junior, the program is already
present in 12 Brazilian states and involves 502 companies.
overseas show-rooms, managerial qualification, green stamp, publications, norms, quality and productivity,
design, purchasing projects, commercial foreign missions, international marketing, and export project of
leather furniture.
For the representative of Brazilian Furniture in Ceara, Leonardo Figueiredo, the meeting in Fortaleza marked
the decentralization of program activities and advances made in the furniture industry in Ceara. Exports of
the furniture sector in Ceara have grown 14 times in the last 9 years. Statistics maintained by FIEC indicate
that, in 1996, Ceara exported US$331,400 compared to US$4,6 million last year.
