Following the collapse of the US financial market in September 2008, the news is bleak
for the US and global economies. Individuals, businesses of all sizes, state
governments, and governments worldwide now face a contraction in credit and loan
facilities. However, as the overall top-ranking global competitive economy, the United
States has the institutions, work force and resilience to recoup its economic growth in
the years ahead.

The country profile of the United States, prepared by the US Central Intelligence
Agency, is available at the following link:
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/us.html.

In spite of an economic slowdown that followed the subprime mortgage crisis in late
2007, American exports and imports continued to grow monthly until their peak in July
2008. From August 2008 imports and exports of goods and services started to retract
and continued to shrink in December.

Total exports of goods and services for
2008 amounted to $1.843 trillion, representing
a
12 percent increased over the year 2007.  Imports of goods and services for 2008,
totaling
$2.520 trillion, also increased over the previous year but at a lower rate of 7.4
percent
.

According to the
US trade statistics as at April 2009, total imports and exports
continued to fall during the period
January to April 2009,  as indicated in the charts
below. Total exports of goods and services fell by
21.9 percent in relation to April 2008.
When compared to April 2008, total imports dropped by 30.8 percent in April 2009.

The charts on the next page show the major US export and import products by end-use
category and commodity.
