In spite of an economic slowdown that followed the subprime mortgage crisis in late
2007, American exports and imports continued to grow monthly until their peak in July
2008. From August 2008 imports and exports of goods and services started to retract
and continued to shrink in December.
Total exports of goods and services for 2008 amounted to $1.843 trillion, representing
a 12 percent increased over the year 2007. Imports of goods and services for 2008,
totaling $2.520 trillion, also increased over the previous year but at a lower rate of 7.4
percent.
According to the US trade statistics as at December 2009, total imports ($1.9 trillion)
and exports ($1.5 trillion) for the period January to December continued their slow
recovery in December 2009, as indicated in the charts below. For the first time in 2009,
total exports and imports of goods and services in December 2009 showed an increase
in relation to the same period last year.
When compared to December 2008, total exports and imports in December 2009 rose
by 7.4 percent and 4.6 percent respectively.
