MICHELINY VERUNSCHK is a Brazilian poet, romance novelist, literary critic, and historian. Born in 1972 in Recife, Pernambuco, she holds a Master Degree in Literature and Literary Criticism, as well as a PhD in Communication and Semiotics from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC). She has lived in São Paulo since 2004.
Considered one of Brazil’s leading contemporary literary voices, Verunschk’s work has been published in several countries including Canada, France, Portugal, Spain, and the United States.
Verunschk made her literary debut in 2003 with the publication of her poetry collection Geografia Íntima do Deserto / Intimate Geography of the Desert, finalist for the 2004 Portugal Telecom Literature Award. Her other books of poetry include:
- O Observador e o Nada / The Observer and Nothingness (2003)
- A Cartografia da Noite / Cartography of the Night (2010)
- B de Bruxa / W for Witch (2014)
- Maravilhas Banais / Banal Wonders (2017), and
- O Movimento dos Pássaros / The Movement of Birds (2020), second place in the 2021 National Library Award for Poetry
She has won several awards for her novels:
- São Paulo Literature Award for Best Novel (2015)
- Jabuti Award (2021), Brazil's most prestigious award, and
- National Library Award in the Short Stories Category (2023)
