PASSAGE FROM WARRIOR OF THE LIGHT: A MANUAL MANUAL DO GUERREIRO DA LUZ PAULO COELHO Translated from the Portuguese for HarperCollins by Margaret Jull Costa
|
Abandoned & broken I confront my fears & foes Warrior of the Light.
HAIKU POEM ROSALIENE BACCHUS
|
Every Warrior of the Light has felt afraid of going into
battle.
Every Warrior of the Light has, at some time in the past,
lied or betrayed someone.
Every Warrior of the Light has trodden a path that was
not his.
Every Warrior of the Light has suffered for the most trivial
of reasons.
Every Warrior of the Light has, at least once, believed
that he was not a Warrior of the Light.
Every Warrior of the Light has failed in his spiritual duties.
Every Warrior of the Light has said "yes" when he wanted
to say "no."
Every Warrior of the Light has hurt someone he loved.
That is why he is a Warrior of the Light, because he has
been through all this and yet has never lost hope of being
better than he is.

Warrior of the Light: A Manual is an inspirational
companion to The Alchemist. Every short passage invites
us to live out our dreams, to embrace the uncertainty of
life, and to rise to our own unique destiny. In his inimitable
style, Paulo Coelho helps bring out the Warrior of the Light
within each of us. He also shows readers how to embark
upon the way of the Warrior: the one who appreciates the
miracle of being alive, the one who accepts failure, and
the one whose quest leads him to become the person he
wants to be.

TRANSLATED FROM THE PORTUGUESE BY MARGARET JULL COSTA.
The original book in Portuguese, Manual do Guerreiro da

Manual includes proverbs and extracts from the Tao Te
Ching, the Bible, the book of Chuang Tzu, the Talmud,

PAULO COELHO,
lyricist and novelist,
was born in Rio de
Janeiro, Southeast
Brazil.
From an early age, he
longed to be a writer
but his devout
Catholic parents saw
no future for him in
that profession. His
rebellious
adolescence drove
them to commit him
to a mental asylum
three times. After
getting out of
institutional care, he
attempted to study
law but dropped out.
Coelho worked as a
songwriter for
Brazilian musicians
protesting Brazil's
military rule. In 1974,
he was arrested for
his political activism
and tortured in prison.
When Coelho was 38
years old, he had a
spiritual awakening in
Spain and wrote about
it in his first book, The
Pilgrimage. He left
his lucrative career as
a songwriter to pursue
writing full time.
His second book, The
Alchemist, catapulted
him to worldwide
fame. Translated into
81 languages, it holds
the Guinness World
Record as the most
translated book by
any living author.

Manual do Guerreiro da Luz
Paulo Coelho
