SONNET OF THE FRIEND
SONETO DO AMIGO
VINICIUS DE MORAES
Translation by Rosaliene Bacchus
Mirror of my
At last, after so many past mistakes
So much retaliation, so much danger
There reappears in another the old friend
Never lost, always found again.
It’s good to sit by his side again
With eyes that contain the familiar look
Always with me a little troubled
And as always particular with me.
A creature just like me, simple and human
Knowing how to move and be moved
And to disguise my own delusion.
Friend: a being life doesn’t explain
Which only goes on seeing another born
And multiplies the mirror of my soul...
"Vinicius is the only Brazilian poet who dared to live
under the sign of passion, What I mean, of poetry in
its natural state."
What makes Vinicius a great poet is his perception of
the dark side of man. And the courage to face it. In
part, from the beginning, of his fundamental themes:
mystery, passion and death.
When he leaves poetry in second place to become the
MPB [Popular Brazilian Music] show-man, to live nine
marriages, to go through life traveling, Vinicius is
exercising, more than ever, the power that Drummond
describes, without concealing his immense envy: "He

Soneto do Amigo
Vinicius de Moraes
Enfim, depois de tanto erro passado
Tantas retaliações, tanto perigo
Eis que ressurge noutro o velho amigo
Nunca perdido, sempre reencontrado.
